Case study
- Rascals Day
Nursery Cumbrian Floods
What
happened?
In November
2009, prolonged heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in
the Cumbria area, affecting many businesses and homes.
Rascals Day Nursery, a pre-school care provider for
babies and young children, was affected by the floods
when a ‘beck’ running near the nursery overflowed and
flooded the property. Extensive damage occurred as
around 200mm of water spread throughout the premises,
leaving it unusable.
Naturally, the
primary concern for the owner was the wellbeing of the
children in her care and the need to minimise disruption
and inconvenience to the parents, who relied heavily on
the nursery to provide care. If she couldn’t reopen
quickly, it would mean parents moving their children to
other nurseries.
How we rose
to the challenge
As soon as we
were contacted, we immediately appointed a loss adjuster
to work with the owner. Knowing how vital it is to
begin drying out the property after flood damage, we
quickly arranged for damage mitigation experts to move
onto the site and start clearing damaged contents and
drying the nursery.
Quick thinking
by the owner meant the nursery was relocated alternative
premises close by, meaning less disruption to the
parents and children. Because we made a quick interim
payment (even issuing a cheque on site) to replace
essential items, it meant the nursery was up and running
so quickly that they didn’t need to claim for any
interruption to business.
Mrs Mitten,
who runs the nursery said: “It was a very worrying
time and I was very keen to make sure we could keep on
running the nursery. I was really impressed by how
quickly Ecclesiastical got experts out to us. And I felt
they really cared about us, even writing me out a cheque
there and then to cover the costs of our equipment.”
